The Shimano Micro Spline freehub driver body standard has been around for some years now. While being a clear step up from the previous HG standard, an even more durable option is now available.

Interface
The traditional HG driver body is up for the task in most cases. Problems with wear and rear can arise with certain setups, though. The most common culprits are cassettes in which the sprockets are placed individually on the freehub driver body instead of being connected to a spider that distributes the load and torque over a larger area. Over time, an individual sprocket can “dig in” to the driver body itself, making service procedures difficult.
Another classical case is the use of single-speed setups, whether it’s in the form of true single-speed fashion or gearbox use. Unless the sprocket is properly dimensioned and manufactured, considerable wear on the interface can take place over time.
The Shimano Micro Spline interface – MS for short – solves the problem by employing an interface with denser splines, distributing the load over greater surface area, and thus making it stronger and more durable. For >90% of use cases, the MS driver does a good job.
Steel for Strength
For particular heavy-duty use cases, like big & strong riders and EMTB use, even a stronger interface might be needed. Until now the chromoly options have been reserved only for Shimano HG and Sram XD(R) freehub driver bodies.
Enter the Shimano Micro Spline chromoly freehub driver body. It’s the equivalent of using a belt and suspenders at the same time when it comes to drivetrain components. Paired with the patented double-row sprag clutch mechanism found in all Classic rear hubs, it creates a drivetrain with strength and longevity like no other!
